Monitoring trade marks using Caveats
You can monitor a trade mark application or registration by sending us a caveat request for information about events in the progress of a trade mark.
A caveat is a warning, or notification, that some action has taken place on a trade mark application or registration. We do not tell the owner of the mark that a caveat is in place.
The most common reasons for filing a caveat is to be notified when an application is advertised in the Trade Marks Journal, or if it fails before advertisement. A caveat is also a useful way of checking the progress of your own application.
The caveat services available to you depend on whether you are interested in a UK or International trade mark.
Monitoring a UK trade mark
To monitor a UK trade mark you can file an e-caveat, or, use our paid caveat service. The one you choose depends on how detailed you want your information to be.
Monitoring an International trade mark
There is no e-caveat system available for International trade marks. To file a caveat for an International trade mark, you need to send us our official form TM31M.
